Medical Facility Tours

Arrangements for medical facility tours are made by Interior AHEC. Medical professionals act at tour guides and provide information about their area of expertise while providing an insider’s look at in a medical department or facility. Providing this type of real-world experience provides an important perspective for students and community members who are interested in the medical field. Tour participants must be at least 15 years of age and all minors must be accompanied by a chaperone.  Most departments/facilities can accommodate 12-15 tour participants at one time; however arrangements can be made for larger groups.  To arrange for a tour, follow the link to the request form Tours . The completed request form can be sent via email to Christy Wiskeman, Education Specialist, at Christina.Wiskeman@bannerhealth.com. Call 458-6416 for questions about the request.

GUEST SPEAKERS

Arrangements for guest speakers are made by Interior AHEC through the use of a Guest Speaker Board that is composed of volunteer speakers from various medical, surgical and healthcare professions to give prospective students some idea of the challenges, rewards and opportunities in today's healthcare workplace.  Speakers are invited to lecture at public lectures, to address student bodies, and to serve as panel members in public debate.  Research has shown that inspiring speakers can greatly affect the propensity of students to choose healthcare as a career. To arrange for a guest speaker, follow the link to the request form Speakers . The completed request form can be sent via email to Christy Wiskeman, Education Specialist, at Christina.Wiskeman@bannerhealth.com. Call 458-6416 for questions about the request.

MINI-MEDICAL SCHOOL

The Mini-Medical School is a community lecture series sponsored by WWAMI as an annual event, alternating between the UAA and UAF campuses, and broadcast by web streaming to the “off-site” location each year so that interested individuals can participate without the expense of travel. The lecture series presents interesting and important aspects of healthcare service and research and is available to anyone in the community who wants to participate. Additionally, some presenters also provide discussion forums concerning ethical and moral issues regarding healthcare.

WWAMI stands for the 5-state collaborative medical school (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho) which is accredited through the University of Washington School of Medicine. WWAMI is Alaska’s medical school, admitting 20 students each year to one of the top-rated medical schools in the country.  Students can complete 3 of the 4 years of medical school curriculum in Alaska, at UA and healthcare institutions statewide.
