Internships, Scholarships and Financial Aid


o   Doyon Foundation offers a broad range of financial aid and support
for Doyon shareholders and other Alaska Natives who are considering
health care professions as a career.  There is additional information
and suggestions on their website for any student interested in
pursuing healthcare and links and resources for additional

o   The Indian Health Service is accepting applications for its externship
program.  For more information or an application, contact Krista

February 4, 2008.

o   The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium awards $5,000 scholarships
to five undergraduate and five graduate full-time students.  For more

or khepworth@anthc.org.  Applications due February 8, 2008.

o   The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium is seeking applications
for its summer 2008 Internship program.  For more information or

o   The Indian Health Service is accepting applications for its scholarship
program, which encourages Alaska Natives and American Indians to
enter the health profession.  For more information or an application,

o   Federal Student Aid information and forms are available at the

o   For information about CHARR scholarships in Alaska go to the following

o   Through this HRSA program (Health Resources and Services Admin.),
nursing school students can receive scholarships to pay for their tuition
and fees, as well as a $1200/month stipend.  Upon graduation, these
nurses must work full-time in a facility deemed to have a critical
shortage of nurses - for at least 2 years (some will have a longer service
commitment).

o   Health Professions Education Scholarship (made possible with a grant
from the Vitamin Consumer Cases Settlement Fund): Students currently
enrolled in a Physician Assistant, Nurse Practioner, Certified Nurse Mid-
wife, Dental, or Dental Hygenist program may receive up to a $10,000 for

o   American Indian Education Foundation:  Offers grants for freshman and
undergraduate Native American or Alaska Native students ranging from
$1,500 to $3,000 annually.  Also links to challenge grants and emergency

o   American Indian Graduate Center assists American Indian college
graduates to continue their education at the masters, doctorate and 
professional degree level.

o   The College Scholarship Program is avalable on a competitive basis
to community college, four-year college and graduate students of
Hispanic heritage.  Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to

  Gates Millennium Scholars Program:  The Gates Millennium Scholars
program expands access to higher education for African Americans
American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic
Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate

o   American Dental Association (ADA):  Offers scholarships of $2,500 for
Dental students and Minority Dental Students and also offers $1,000 for
allied dental health scholars.

o   Latino Medical Student Associaton:  Promotes the recruitment, retention,
academic success and support of Latinos in health profession careers.
Offers an MCAT and a Medial Admissions scholarship-dependent on the

  Indian Health Service Scholarships:  Applicants must be members of a
federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native tribe.  Scholarships
are divided into preparatory, pre-graduate, health professions, and extern
groups.

o   Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships:  These awards consist
of five scholarships given to outstanding students entering their third-year
of medical school who have shown leadership efforts to eliminate inequities
in medical education and health care and demonstrated leadership efforts
 in addressing educational, societal and health-care needs of minorities.  Each
recipient receives an award and a $5,000 scholarship in November of the
year the scholarships are awarded.
