Internships, Scholarships and Financial Aid

 


o   Doyon Foundation offers a broad range of financial aid and support for Doyon shareholders and other Alaska Natives who are considering health care professions as a career.  There is additional information and suggestions on their website for any student interested in  pursuing healthcare and links and resources for additional financial aid.  Go to www.doyonfoundation.com or email to foundation@doyon.com for further information.

o   The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium awards $5,000 scholarships to five undergraduate and five graduate full-time students.  For more information or an application, contact Krista Hepworth at 907.729.1348 or khepworth@anthc.org

o   The Indian Health Service is accepting applications for its scholarship program, which encourages Alaska Natives and American Indians to enter the health profession.  For more information or an application, contact Krista Hepworth at 907.729.1348 or khepworth@anthc.org.

o   The Alaska Cabaret, Hotel, Restaurant and Retailer's Association (CHARR) scholarship forms and information are available at:  www.alaskacharr.com/Scholarships.html .

o   Through this HRSA program (Health Resources and Services Admin.), nursing school students can receive scholarships to pay for their tuition and fees, as well as a $1200/month stipend.  Upon graduation, these nurses must work full-time in a facility deemed to have a critical shortage of nurses - for at least 2 years (some will have a longer service commitment).  For Information: http://bhpr.hrsa.gov/nursing/scholarship/

o   Health Professions Education Scholarship (made possible with a grant from the Vitamin Consumer Cases Settlement Fund): Students currently enrolled in a Physician Assistant, Nurse Practioner, Certified Nurse Mid-wife, Dental, or Dental Hygenist program may receive up to a $10,000 for one academic year.  http://www.oshpd.ca.gov/HPEF/

o   American Indian Education Foundation:  Offers grants for freshman and undergraduate Native American or Alaska Native students ranging from $1,500 to $3,000 annually.  Also links to challenge grants and emergency funding.  http://www.aiefprograms.org/scholarshipapplication.htm

o   American Indian Graduate Center assists American Indian college graduates to continue their education at the masters, doctorate and professional degree level.

o   The Hispanic Scholarship Fund has scholarships avalable on a competitive basis to community college, four-year college and graduate students of Hispanic heritage.  Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $3,000.  http://www.hsf.net/

  Gates Millennium Scholars Program:  The Gates Millennium Scholars program expands access to higher education for African Americans American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Americans, and Hispanic Americans enrolling in and completing undergraduate and graduate degree programs.  http://gmsp.org/

o   American Dental Association (ADA):  Offers scholarships of $2,500 for Dental students and Minority Dental Students and also offers $1,000 for allied dental health scholars.

o   Latino Medical Student Associaton:  Promotes the recruitment, retention, academic success and support of Latinos in health profession careers. Offers an MCAT and a Medial Admissions scholarship-dependent on the availability of annual funding.  http://www.lmsa.net/scholarships.htm

  Indian Health Service Scholarships:  Applicants must be members of a federally recognized American Indian or Alaska Native tribe.  Scholarships are divided into preparatory, pre-graduate, health professions, and extern groups.

o   Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarships:  These awards consist of five scholarships given to outstanding students entering their third-year of medical school who have shown leadership efforts to eliminate inequities in medical education and health care and demonstrated leadership efforts  in addressing educational, societal and health-care needs of minorities.  Each recipient receives an award and a $5,000 scholarship in November of the year the scholarships are awarded.
