The Director of Interior AHEC is responsible for day to day operations, grant writing and administration of the only AHEC office in an area approximately 350,000 square miles in size.  Retention in the healthcare professions is a priority for the Director and in addition to administration duties, this position has taken on the goal of continuing education needs assessment for rural providers.  Coordination of continuing education courses, professional certifications, and conferences and workshops are part of the plan to reverse the net loss of healthcare professionals in Interior Alaska.

The education specialist is responsible for educating and recruiting Alaskans into health careers in an effort to reduce the shortage of health care workers in Alaska.  Opportunities such as job fairs, guest speakers, tours of medical facilities, and job shadows can be arranged through the education specialist for middle and high school students, student groups and organizations, and others seeking to learn more about health careers.  Education and recruitment are vital parts of AHEC’s effort to reduce the gap in Alaska’s health care needs.

The Clinical Rotations Liaison endeavors to secure student placements in medically underserved areas in Alaska. The Coordinator will arrange contracts, transport, housing and teachers for those students that require practical experience in a health care facility as part of their curriculum. In addition, the Coordinator works to increase the number of health care facilities in the Interior of Alaska that can support student placements.

The Administrative Assistant for Interior AHEC works with each of the program areas, and lends support as needed. Many of the details for student orientations are managed from this office, and data entry for keeping track of program participants over time. Also, student and instructor compliance with state and federal regulations for health care workers are monitored on an ongoing basis.
